THE RSZ PAYS GOVERNMENT TREASURY 10.9BILLION KWACHA IN 2009 IN FORM OF TAXES SAYS TRANSPORTS AND COMMUNICATIONS DEPUTY MINISTER

COMMUNICATIONS AND TRANSPORT DEPUTY MINISTER MUBIKA MUBIKA HAS REVEALED THAT THE RAILWAY SYSTEM OF ZAMBIA (RSZ) PAID THE ZAMBIAN GOVERNMENT THROUGH THE TREASURY ABOUT 10.3BILLION KWACHA IN FORM OF TAXES IN 2009.
MR MUBIKA TOLD PARLIAMENT YESTERDAY MORNING DURING THE QUESTION AND ANSWER SESSION THAT THE COMPANY ALSO OVERHAULED ABOUT 16 LOCOMOTIVES FROM THE 57 IT RECEIVED AT A TOTAL COST OF $7.2MILLION.
THE COMPANY FURTHER PLANS TO OVER HAUL 4MORE LOCOMOTIVES THIS YEAR EVEN THOUGH THE COMPANY HAS NOT DISCLOSED THE NEW PRICE THE EXERCISE WILL COST.
THE DEPUTY MINISTER POINTED OUT THAT IN ORDER TO REDUCE THE COST GOVERNMENT IS SPENDING IN REPAIRING THE ROADS IN THE COUNTRY WHICH ARE GETTING DAMAGED DUE TO THE HEAVY TRACKS USING THE ROADS TO TRANSPORT HEAVY GOODS WHICH CAN BE TRANSPORTED USING THE WAGONS OF RSZ, GOVERNMENT HAS ENGAGED THE COMPANY TO ENSURE THAT THEY FINISH OVER HAULING THE REMAINING WAGONS.
HE DISCLOSED THAT THE COMPANY HAS STARTED RECAPITALIZING AND INVESTING IN THE OPERATIONS SINCE THE TIME OF CONCESSION IN 2003 WHICH HAS RESULTED IN IMPROVED OPERATIONS
