Northern province PS directs provincial medical officer to suspend operations of marie stopes international for conducting illegal abortions.


Northern Province Permanent Secretary, Emmanuel Mwamba Has Directed The Provincial Medical Officer (Pmo), Dr. Jelita Chinyonga, To Immediately Suspend The Operations Of A Non-Governmental Organisation Marie Stopes Zambia International For Conducting Illegal Abortions In Muchinga And Northern Provinces.

In Its Official Report To The Ministry Of Health, Marie Stopes International Has Disclosed That It Has Been Conducting Medical Abortions In Mbala, Kasama, And Nakonde Districts.


In January To May This Year, Marie Stopes International Zambia Conducted 430 Abortions In Nakonde.
In Kasama The Organisation Conducted 30 Abortions From January To May 2012 And In Mpika, It Conducted 30 Abortions Between January To May 2012.
In A Letter To The Pmo Dated 20th July 2012 And Copied To Health Permanent Secretary, Dr. Peter Mwaba And Made Available To Radio Phoenix Today, Mr. Mwamba States That The Organisation’s Activities Are Inimical To The Province As They Are Carrying Out Abortion Activities Outside The Law.
He Said The Organisation Is Performing Abortions Based On Social Reasons, Social Conditions Or Performed Abortions On The Mere Basis That The Pregnancy Was Unwanted.
He Said The Law Is Very Categorical On The Circumstances Under Which Abortions Can Be Performed.
He Has Also Directed The Provincial Police Commissioner, Ms Mary Chikwanda To Follow Up The Matter And Ensure That The Officials Involved Are Brought To Book.
The Law Provides That Abortions Can Only Be Carried Out In Zambia If Three Separate Doctors Certify That The Life Of The Mother Is In Danger.
Mr. Mwamba Stated That The Abortions Marie Stopes Was Performing Were Illegal And Did Not Take Into Account The Provisions Of The Law.

He Cited Nakonde Where Bulk Of The Abortions Have Been Done Yet The District Has Only One Doctor In The Name Of Dr. Mike Chisha.
Mr. Mwamba Has Directed That Marie Stopes International Zambia, Which Has Targeted Clinics And Hospitals In The Rural Areas, To Immediately Stop Illegal Activities In The Two Provinces Or Risk Immediate Criminal Action.
He Has Urged The Ministry Of Health To Scrutinise Foreign Non-Governmental Organizations That Are Operating In The Country To Ensure That Their Activities Are Not Inimical To The Country.
Marie Stopes Is A Non-Governmental Organisation From The United States Of America And Is In The Country.
Under The 1972 Pregnancy Act, An Abortion Or Pregnancy Can Only Be Terminated If The Pregnancy Constitutes A Risk To The Life Of The Pregnant Female.
