ZAMBIA'S ENERGY REGULATION BOARD SAYS IT IS STILL REVIEWING THE LICENSE APPLICATION AND THE PROPOSED POWER PURCHASE AGREEMENT BETWEEN NDOLA ENERGY COMPANY LIMITED (NEC) AND ZESCO LIMITED

THE ENERGY REGULATION BOARD SAYS IT IS STILL REVIEWING THE LICENSE APPLICATION AND THE PROPOSED POWER PURCHASE AGREEMENT BETWEEN NDOLA ENERGY COMPANY LIMITED (NEC) AND ZESCO LIMITED AFTER THE COMPANY NEC EXPRESSED INTEREST IN DEVELOPING A HEAVY FUEL POWERED PLANT TO BE CONSTRUCTED IN NDOLA.
ACCORDING TO A PRESS STATEMENT MADE AVAILABLE TO RADIO PHOENIX TODAY BY ERB COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER KWALI MFUNI ,NEC WHICH IS A SUBSIDIARY OF CONCODIA ENERGY GROUP OF MAURITIUS INTENDS TO GENERATE 50MEGA WATTS AT ITS THERMO PLANT TO BE LOCATED NEXT TO INDENI PETROLEUM REFINERY.
MS MFUNI SAYS THE CONSTRUCT OF THE 50MEGA WATTS THERMAL PLANT IN NDOLA AT A TOTAL COST OF OVER $65MILLION WILL NOT ONLY INCREASE THE GENERATION CAPACITY OF ZAMBIA BUT WILL ADDRESS THE CHALLENGE OF STORAGE SPACE AT INDENI, WHERE HEAVY FUEL OIL IS STOCKPILED DUE TO LIMITED DEMAND.
SHE HAS STATED THAT IT IS ENVISAGED THAT THE POWER GENERATED AT NEC WOULD BE TRANSMITTED THROUGH THE ALREADY EXISTING 33KILLOVOLTS, TO BWANA MKUBWA SUBSTATION AND THEN TO THE NATIONAL GRID.
MR. MFUNI FURTHER SAID THAT IN ORDER TO SECURE A READY MARKET FOR THE POWER IT INTENDS TO GENERATE, NEC HAS SUBMITTED A POWER PURCHASE AGREEMENT TO ERB FOR A STATUTORY APPROVAL ADDING THAT THE COMPANY PLANS TO SELL 50MEGA WATTS TO ZESCO LIMITED
SHE SAYS ZESCO WOULD BE THE SOLE OFF-TAKER OF THE POWER GENERATED BY NEC AND THE POWER PURCHASE AGREEMENT (PPA) IS ENVISAGED TO RUN FOR A PERIOD OF 15YEARS WITH THE OPTION OF A FIVE YEAR EXTENSION.
MEANWHILE MS MFUNI DISCLOSED THAT THE ERB RECENTLY ALSO CONSIDERED TWO POWER PURCHASE AGREEMENT’S INVOLVING ZESCO WITH ITEZHI-TEZI POWER CORPORATION AND ELECTRICIDE DE MOZAMBIQUE OF MOZAMBIQUE.
