BARCLAY’S BANK COMPANY SECRETARY LAWRENCE DICKSON NOTES THAT THE WORLD IS FACED WITH A VICIOUS CYCLE OF INCREASED POVERTY, UNEMPLOYMENT, INEQUALITY AND POSSIBLE CIVIL UNREST DUE TO LACK OF FINANCIAL TRAINING AND EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES AMONGST YOUTHS

VISITING BARCLAY’S BANK COMPANY SECRETARY LAWRENCE DICKSON HAS NOTED THAT THE WORLD IS FACED WITH A VICIOUS CYCLE OF INCREASED POVERTY, UNEMPLOYMENT, INEQUALITY AND POSSIBLE CIVIL UNREST DUE TO LACK OF FINANCIAL TRAINING AND EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES AMONGST THE YOUTHS.
SPEAKING LAST NIGHT IN LUSAKA AFTER BARCLAYS BANK HOSTED A NIGHT GALA IN HIS HONOR, MR. DICKSON SAID IT IS SHAMEFUL THAT 50 PERCENT OF THE WORLD’S POPULATION RESOURCE WHICH COMPRISES YOUTHS IS GOING TO WASTE AND LITTLE IS BEING DONE ABOUT IT.
MR DICKSON DISCLOSED THAT IN HELPING TO REDUCE THE UNEMPLOYMENT LEVELS IN THE WORLD, HIS BANK DEVELOPED A PROGRAMME TITLED “BUILDING OUR FUTURE” SINCE 2008 WHICH IS AIMED AT ADDRESSING THE CHALLENGES OF THE YOUTH IN 13 AFRICAN COUNTRIES OF WHICH ZAMBIA IS AMONGST THEM.
HE SAID A TOTAL BUDGET OF 5 MILLION POUNDS WAS SET ASIDE FOR A THREE YEAR PERIOD.
MR. DICKSON SAID THE “BUILDING OUR YOUTHS” PROGRAMME WHICH IS BEING IMPLEMENTED IN COLLABORATION WITH UNICEF TARGETS ABOUT 3000 YOUNG PEOPLE IN ZAMBIA TO ACCESS BUSINESS SKILLS AND BASIC VOCATIONAL TRAINING.
SPEAKING EARLIER BARCLAYS BANK ZAMBIA MANAGING DIRECTOR SAVIOR CHIBIYA POINTED THAT IN THE GLOBAL PARTNERSHIP WITH UNICEF WHICH COVERS OVER A THREE YEAR PERIOD, THE BANK HAS SO FAR INVESTED MORE THAN TWO BILLION KWACHA TO ENABLE THOUSANDS OF YOUNG PEOPLE IN ZAMBIA ACCESS BUSINESS SKILLS AND BASIC VOCATION TRAINING.
MEANWHILE SPORTS, YOUTH AND CHILD DEVELOPMENT PERMANENT SECRETARY TEDDY MULONGA THANKED THE BANK FOR CONTRIBUTING TO THE UPLIFTING OF THE STANDARD OF YOUTHS IN THE COUNTRY AND REQUESTED THAT THE PROGRAMME BE EXTENDED TO ALLOW FOR MORE YOUTHS TO ACCESS THE SKILLS.
MR MULONGA STATED THAT GOVERNMENT WILL PLAY ITS PART OF LINKING THE YOUTHS TO ACCESS THE FUNDS FROM THE CITIZENS’ ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT COMMISSION AND ESTABLISH THEIR BUSINESSES.
