THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION REVEALS THAT NEGLECTED TROPICAL DISEASES ARE AMONG SOME OF THE MOST COMMON INFECTIONS THAT ARE AFFECTING ABOUT 2.7BILLION OF THE POOREST PEOPLE .

THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION (WHO) HAS REVEALED THAT NEGLECTED TROPICAL DISEASES ARE AMONG SOME OF THE MOST COMMON INFECTIONS THAT ARE AFFECTING ABOUT 2.7BILLION OF THE POOREST PEOPLE OF THE WORLD MOST OF WHOM ARE SURVIVING ON LESS THAN $2 PER DAY.
WHO COUNTRY REPRESENTATIVE TO ZAMBIA DR. OLUSEGUN BABNIYI SAYS THE DISEASES OCCUR PRIMARILY IN RURAL AREAS AND IN SOME POOR URBAN SETTINGS OF LOW-INCOME COUNTRIES IN SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA, ASIA AND LATIN AMERICA AND AS SUCH THE DISEASES LEAD TO LONG TERM DISABILITY AND POVERTY AMONG IMPOVERISHED COMMUNITIES.
DR BABNIYI HAS STATED THAT NEGLECTED TROPICAL DISEASES (NTD’S) CAUSE APPROXIMATELY 534,000 DEATHS ANNUALLY AND THE DISABILITY AND POVERTY ASSOCIATED WITH THE DISEASES HAS BEEN SHOWN TO CONSTITUTE LARGE BURDENS ON THE HEALTH AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OF LOW INCOME COUNTRIES.
THE WHO COUNTRY REPRESENTATIVE POINTED OUT THAT THE ORGANIZATION IN COLLABORATION WITH PARTNERS HAS DEVELOPED PROTOCOLS AND GUIDELINES ON MANAGEMENT OF NEGLECTED TROPICAL DISEASES AND AS THE COUNTRIES ENTER INTO THE POST MAPPING PHASE FOR NTDS THERE IS NEED TO TAKE THE OPPORTUNITY TO CONTROL OR EVEN ELIMINATE SOME OF THE MOST IMPORTANT DISEASES IN TERMS OF PREVALENCE.
DR BABNIYI WAS SPEAKING AT THE ANNUAL REVIEW MEETING OF NEGLECTED TROPICAL DISEASES IN LUSAKA TODAY.

CHRISTOPHER KALILA ALSO CALLED FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF STRATEGIES FOR BEHAVIOR CHANGE COMMUNICATION AT PROVINCIAL, DISTRICT AND COMMUNITY LEVEL TO REDUCE THE NEGATIVE IMPACT SOCIALLY AND ECONOMICALLY THE DISEASES HAVE.
DR KALILA NOTED THAT CONTROL AND ERADICATION OF NTDS REQUIRES STRONG PARTNERSHIP, DEVELOPMENT OF POLICIES AND GUIDELINES,  RESOURCE MOBILIZATION AND COORDINATION ACROSS SECTORS WHICH ARE DIFFERENTLY RESOURCED AND HAVE DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES.
