ZAMTEL AND THE NATIONAL UNION FOR COMMUNICATION WORKERS SIGNS AN AMENDED RECOGNITION AGREEMENT

ZAMTEL AND THE NATIONAL UNION FOR COMMUNICATION WORKERS (NUCW) HAVE SIGNED AN AMENDED RECOGNITION AGREEMENT AIMED AT SAFEGUARDING THE INTEREST AND WELFARE OF ALL UNIONIZED EMPLOYEES.
IN A JOINT STATEMENT RELEASED TODAY, THE TWO INSTITUTIONS HAVE  AGREED TO PURSUE A STABLE AND HARMONIOUS RELATIONSHIP TO PROMOTE AND PROTECT THE WELFARE OF ZAMTEL EMPLOYEES.
THE TWO PARTIES ENDORSED THE PRINCIPLE OF FREEDOM OF ASSOCIATION AND RECOGNIZED THE RIGHT OF INDIVIDUALS TO BELONG TO A UNION OF THEIR CHOICE OR REFRAIN FROM MEMBERSHIP.
THE AGREEMENT SIGNED TODAY STATES THAT UNION MEMBERSHIP IS NOT A CONDITION FOR EMPLOYMENT BUT A CHOICE OF AN INDIVIDUAL AND MEMBERS SHALL NOT BE PRESSURED OR VICTIMIZED IN ANY WAY FOR THEIR DECISION TO JOIN OR WITHDRAW FROM MEMBERSHIP.
NATIONAL UNION OF COMMUNICATION WORKERS PRESIDENT PATRICK KAONGA SAYS THE NEWLY SIGNED AGREEMENT HAD BEEN RATIFIED BY THE MINISTRY OF LABOUR, TAKING INTO ACCOUNT NEW ASPECTS AGREED UPON BY MANAGEMENT AND THE UNION.
MR. KAONGA SAYS BEFORE PARTIAL PRIVATIZATION, ZAMTEL EMPLOYEES WERE REPRESENTED BY THE UNION, ADDING THAT AFTER THE NEW MANAGEMENT TOOK OVER, THE UNION PROPOSED SOME AMENDMENTS THEY WANTED CONTAINED IN THE AGREEMENT WHICH ZAMTEL HAS CONSENTED TO.  
AND ZAMTEL CHIEF HUMAN RESOURCES AND ADMINISTRATION OFFICER EVE BANDA SAYS THE AGREEMENT IS MEANT TO INSPIRE A MOTIVATED WORKFORCE.
SHE SAYS ZAMTEL RECOGNIZES AND RESPECTS ZAMBIA’S LABOUR PRINCIPLES AND WILL ENDEAVOR TO UPHOLD THE RIGHTS OF EMPLOYEES AS STIPULATED BY THE LAW.
