SENIOR CITIZENS ASSOCIATION OF ZAMBIA CHAIRPERSON KUFEKISA LAUGERY NOTES THAT THE LACK OF KNOWLEDGE ABOUT HUMAN RIGHTS AMONGST OLD PEOPLE HAS CONTINUED TO PERPETUATE THE SITUATION OF ABUSE

SENIOR CITIZENS ASSOCIATION OF ZAMBIA CHAIRPERSON KUFEKISA LAUGERY HAS NOTED THAT THE LACK OF KNOWLEDGE ABOUT HUMAN RIGHTS AMONGST OLD PEOPLE HAS CONTINUED TO PERPETUATE THE SITUATION OF ABUSE AND ABROGATION OF THE VARIOUS LEGISLATIONS.
SPEAKING DURING THE OFFICIAL OPENING OF A TWO DAYS WORKSHOP DUBBED “COMMUNITY RIGHTS AWARENESS” IN LUSAKA WEST YESTERDAY; MRS. LAUGERY SAID THAT MOST OF THE ELDERLY PEOPLE IN COMMUNITIES ARE NOT AWARE OF THEIR VARIOUS HUMAN RIGHTS BECAUSE THERE HAS NOT BEEN MUCH AWARENESS.
MRS. LAUGERY SAID THAT GOVERNMENT SHOULD ENSURE THAT IT IMPLEMENTS THE POLICY FOR AGED TO HELP START CHANNELING SOME FUNDS TOWARDS EDUCATING THE OLD PEOPLE ABOUT THEIR GOD GIVEN ENTITLEMENT.
SHE STATED THAT THE SITUATION ON THE GROUND CURRENTLY IS PROVING NOT TO BE SUITABLE TO THE OLD PEOPLE BECAUSE THEY ARE GETTING ABUSE WITHOUT REALIZING THAT IF THEY STARTING SPEAKING OUT, THESE ACTIVITIES CAN BE STOPPED.
MRS. LAUGERY CALLED ON THE ELDERLY PEOPLE TO STAND UP AND START DEMANDING WHAT IS DUE TO THEM JUST LIKE THE WOMEN AND YOUTH MOVEMENTS HAVE BEEN DOING TO ENSURE THAT THEIR VOICES ARE HEAD AND NOT LEFT OUT IN NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT.
