DEMOCRATIC GOVERNANCE AND HUMAN RIGHTS ADVOCATES APPEALS TO ZAMBIAN CHIEFS TO ENSURE THAT THEY PLAY THEIR ROLES PROPERLY

DEMOCRATIC GOVERNANCE AND HUMAN RIGHTS ADVOCATES HAS APPEALED TO THE HOUSE OF CHIEFS CHAIRPERSON TO ENSURE THAT CHIEFS PLAY THEIR ROLES OF BEING PARENTS AND TO BE ACCEPTING ALL POLITICAL  PARTIES TO BE CAMPAIGNING FREELY IN THEIR RESPECTIVE CHIEFDOMS WITHOUT CHIEFS HAVING PREFERRED CANDIDATES OF THEIR CHOICE.
DEGHA NATIONAL CO-ORDINATOR GERALD MUTELO SAYS CHIEFS MUST ALWAYS WORK WITH THE GOVERNMENT OF THE DAY BECAUSE THEY PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT.
HE HOWEVER, SAYS THAT CHIEFS MUST NOT BE AVERTING PRESSURE ON THEIR SUBJECTS TO VOTE FOR THE CANDIDATES WHOM THEY WANT BUT MUST ALLOW THEIR SUBJECTS TO CHOOSE LEADERS OF THEIR CHOICE WITHOUT ANY FEAR.
MR. MUTELO HAS STATED THAT CHIEF’S AND HEADMEN’S ARE PARENTS AND IF THEY BECOME PARTISAN THEY WILL LOSE THEIR RESPECT AND DIGNITY WHICH SUBJECTS GIVE TO THEM THEREFORE THEY MUST ALWAYS BE NON PARTISAN AND EMBRACE ALL PLAYERS IN THE ELECTORAL PROCESS.
HE SAYS CHIEFS AND HEADMEN’S MUST BE READING AND UNDERSTANDING THE ELECTORAL CODE OF CONDUCT SO THAT THEY KNOW THEIR ROLES WISELY.
MEANWHILE DEGHA HAS WARNED ALL ASPIRING CANDIDATES AND THE SELECTING COMMITTEES IN WARDS, CONSTITUENCIES AND NATIONAL COMMITTEES FOR ALL POLITICAL PARTIES THAT THEY MUST SELECT CANDIDATES IN A TRANSPARENT MANNER AND NOT THROUGH CORRUPT MEANS.
DEGHA HAS FURTHER ADVISED THE SELECTING COMMITTEE TO REPORT TO THE LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES ALL THE CANDIDATES WHO WILL WANT TO BRIBE THEM IN ORDER TO BE SELECTED AS CANDIDATES.
THIS IS ACCORDING TO A PRESS STATEMENT MADE AVAILABLE TO RADIO PHOENIX TODAY WHERE THE ORGANIZATION HAS ALSO CALLED FOR THE ADOPTION OF MORE YOUTHS AND WOMEN AS CANDIDATES, AND TO BE GENDER SENSITIVE.
