AGRICULTURE AND COOPERATIVES MINISTER DR EUSTARCKIO KAZONGA HAS NOTED THAT THE REGION`S FOOD SECURITY IS AT STAKE IF MEMBERS OF THE INTERNATIONAL RED LOCUST CONTROL ORGANIZATION FOR CENTRAL AND SOUTHERN AFRICA (IRLCO-CSA) DO NOT PULL THEIR RESOURCES TOGETHER URGENTLY
DR KAZONGA HAS URGENTLY IMPLORED THE MEMBERS OF THE INTERNATIONAL RED LOCUST CONTROL ORGANIZATION FOR CENTRAL AND SOUTHERN AFRICA (IRLCO-CSA) TO PULL THEIR RESOURCES TOGETHER AS A REGION TO CONTINUE FIGHTING PESTS SUCH AS THE RED LOCUST TO ENSURE FOOD SECURITY IN THE REGION.
SPEAKING TODAY DURING THE 34TH REGULAR SESSION OF THE GOVERNING COUNCIL OF MINISTERS OF THE IRLCO-CSA WHICH IS COMPRISED OF KENYA, MOZAMBIQUE, ZIMBABWE, MALAWI AND TANZANIA, DR KAZONGA HAS POINTED OUT THAT THE REGION BODY MEMBERS MUST NOT REMAIN COMPLACENT IN THE FIGHT TO ENSURE FOOD SECURITY.
HE SAYS LOCUST AND OTHER MIGRATORY PESTS HAVE SHOWN THAT THEY DO NOT HAVE MAN MADE OR POLITICAL BOUNDARIES AS THEY MIGRATE FROM ONE COUNTRY TO ANOTHER CAUSING HAVOC TO THE REGION`S CROPS SUCH AS MAIZE HENCE THE NEED TO APPRECIATE, MAINTAIN AND STRENGTHEN THE EXISTING COOPERATION IN FIGHTING THE COMMON ENEMY.
DR KAZONGA HAS NOTED THAT ONE OF THE EARLIEST RECOGNIZED AND BEST KNOWN AND POTENTIALLY THE MOST DANGEROUS GENUS OF THE MIGRATORY PEST IS THE SWARMING LOCUST WHICH INCLUDES THE RED LOCUST.
HE HAS OBSERVED THAT IF THESE ARE NOT CONTROLLED THEY ESCAPE AND INVADE AND DEVOUR CULTIVATED CROPS OUTSIDE THE OUTBREAK AREAS.
